Canned to Fresh Equivalents

I try to cook from scratch whenever possible, but sometimes recipes call for canned ingredients. Here is a list of some of the common canned ingredients I have ran into, and their fresh/dry equivalents.


  • Diced Tomatoes: 1-14.5oz can diced tomatoes=approximately 3 diced fresh tomatoes. If your tomatoes are very juicy and you don't want all the juice, slice the tomatoes and cut out the seeded portion.
  • Refried Beans: 1 can refried beans=2/3 cup of dry beans
  • Onion powder: 1 tsp onion powder=1 tablespoon dried onion flakes= 1 small onion
